Quotes on As a Man Thinketh

A noted plastic surgeon, Dr. Maxwell Maltz, in his book Psycho Cybernetics, states that, “Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between an actual experience and one that is vividly imagined.”  He likens the body to a computer which is programmed by what ideas are fixed into it from the forebrain.  Thus, vividly imagined experiences are conditioning or training the nervous system and, therefore, the whole body to react to a given situation in the imagined way.  “Hence a person who continually creates fantasies in which he imagines himself involved in immoral behavior is actually training himself to perform immoral behavior when opportunity to do so comes.”

We now understand:  “For as a man thinketh in his heart so is he.”  (Proverbs 23:7)

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not commit adultery.  But I say unto you that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”  (Matthew 5:27-28) — President David O. McKay, Instructor, March 1965, p. 86
