Quotes on Nephites, Lamanites

It is commonly believed that there are no more Nephites because that nation was completely destroyed by the Lamanites about A.D. 400.  At the time the Savior visited the people of the Book of Mormon, however, they were all united as children of Christ, and there were no Nephites and Lamanites (see 4 Nephi 1:17).  Later on, when wickedness was again rampant among them, they divided up into groups called Lamanites and Nephites, only this time the division was not according to descent but according to righteousness – the Nephites were those that wanted to live the commandments of God, and the Lamanites were those that did not (see 4 Nephi 1:38).  Thus, descendants of Nephi, Jacob, Joseph, and Zoram were found among the Lamanites of that day, and some of their descendants are among native Americans today.  Others of Nephi’s descendants can also be accounted for by the scripture in Mormon 6:15, which records that some of Mormon’s people dissented and joined the Lamanites in the last great battle. — Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual, pp. 10-11
