Quotes on Spirit Children

By gaining exaltation – which includes the fulness of the Father and “a continuation of the seeds forever and ever” – men become “gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue.”  (D&C 132:19-20) That is, those who gain eternal increase, who have unending spirit children in the resurrection, have thereby become from everlasting to everlasting.  Because of their eternal progeny they continue everlastingly without end; from eternity to eternity they are the same; and being perfected and exalted beings, their course never varies, nor is there shadow of turning to the right or the left. — Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 244

The Father has promised us that through our faithfulness we shall be blessed with the fulness of his kingdom.  In other words we will have the privilege of becoming like him. To become like him we must have all the powers of godhood; thus a man and his wife when glorified will have spirit children who eventually will go on an earth like this one we are on and pass through the same kind of experiences, being subject to mortal conditions, and if faithful, then they also will receive the fulness of exaltation and partake of the same blessings.  There is no end to this development; it will go on forever.  We will become gods and have jurisdiction over worlds, and these worlds will be peopled by our own offspring. — President Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, p. 48

The time will come when we will not only create with our wives the mortal tabernacles which our earthly children occupy, but we will be able to expand our efforts and extend them and go out into the great eternities.  And we will be able to produce great families of spirit children who in turn may return to that planet which you will have organized and will have made habitable.  And those children will be permitted to go to those planets or earths, and there they will receive mortal bodies to have their schooling process so that eventually they also can return to their Heavenly Father. The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p. 53

What do we mean by endless or eternal increase?  We mean that through the righteousness and faithfulness of men and women who keep the commandments of God they will come forth with celestial bodies, fitted and prepared to enter into their great, high and eternal glory in the celestial kingdom of God; and unto them, through their preparation, there will come children, who will be spirit children.  I don’t think that is very difficult to comprehend and understand.  The nature of the offspring is determined by the nature of the substance that flows in the veins of the being.  When blood flows in the veins of the being, the offspring will be what blood produces, which is tangible flesh and bone, but when that which flows in the veins is spirit matter, a substance which is more refined and pure and glorious than blood, the offspring of such beings will be spirit children.  By that I mean they will be in the image of the parents.  They will have a spirit body and have a spark of the eternal or divine that always did exist in them. — Elder Melvin J. Ballard, Three Degrees of Glory, p. 10

Eternal life thus comes only to those who know the Father and the Son, and who know them in the sense of doing and experiencing what it is their eternal lot to do and experience.  In this sense, no one can know God without possessing the knowledge and exercising the power vested in Deity, without creating as he creates, without fathering spirit children as he fathers his eternal progeny, without all that he does. — Elder Bruce R. McConkie, The Mortal Messiah, Vol.4, p. 109

As men view things from their mortal perspective, there was a past eternity and there will be a future eternity.  The past eternity embraced the sphere of eternal existence which all men had as the spirit offspring of exalted parents in pre-existence.  The future eternity will be that eternal sphere in which the righteous, having gained both immortality and eternal life, will themselves become exalted parents and have a continuation of the seeds forever and ever.  (D&C 132:19-25)  In this sense, eternity becomes a measure of eternal “time.”  Those past ages when all men dwelt in the presence of their Eternal Father were one eternity, and those future ages when these spirit children will have gone on to exaltation, having spirit children of their own, will be another eternity. — Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 240

Only the Father is or could be the author of the plan of salvation.  He alone was in a position to ordain the laws and establish the system whereby his spirit children (Christ included!) could be saved.  Others might perform labors for a portion or for all of the family of God, but only he could create salvation and specify how it might be gained.  This concept becomes clear when we learn how God came to be God, how he gained his exaltation, and how he made provision for his spirit children….  — Elder Bruce R. McConkie, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, p. 63
