Quotes on Inventions

President David O. McKay, speaking in the October 1966 conference of the Church, said of the scientific discoveries of recent years which will make possible the preaching of the gospel to every kindred, tongue, and people:  “They stagger the imagination.”

And further:  “. . . discoveries latent with such potent power, either for the blessing or the destruction of human beings as to make men’s responsibility in controlling them the most gigantic ever placed in human hands. . . . This age is fraught with limitless perils, as well as untold possibilities.” — President Spencer W. Kimball, “When the World Will Be Converted,” Ensign, October 1974, p. 10

Those who make these discoveries are inspired of God or they would never make them.  The Lord gave inspiration to Edison, to Franklin, to Morse, to Whitney and to all of the inventors and discoverers, and through their inspiration they obtained the necessary knowledge and were able to manufacture and invent as the have done for the benefit of the world.  Without the help of the Lord they would have been just as helpless as the people were in other ages.  — President Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 1:147
